History of the Marion Mallet ClubOrganized croquet play began in Marion when the Sippican Chowder and Marching Band and the Marion Mallet Club merged in 1984.
The first formal meeting of the Club was held on July 3, 1984. At that meeting a president and a secretary/treasurer were named. The second formal meeting of the Club was held on September 8, 1984. The membership at this time was comprised of twenty-one members. From 1984 until 1990, play was conducted on various private courts. The Marion Mallet Club held its opening celebration on May 19, 1990, ultimately finding a home on a leased property at 15 Holmes Street. In July of 1993 the Marion Mallet Club was officially elected to membership in the United States Croquet Association and in the spring of 1994, the Holmes Street court was completed and became home to the Marion Mallet Club. The court was regulation size, measuring 105 ft. by 84 ft, however, as membership increased, it was decided that in order to accommodate the greater number of members, the court should be divided in half thus creating two courts, and by 1996 the court had been further improved with the addition of a bulletin board and deadness board holders. The Marion Mallet Club welcomes new members. Anyone interested in joining should contact the membership chair to inquire about membership. |
